On the annual Day of Silence, hundreds of thousands of students nationwide take some form of a vow of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBTQ bullying and harassment to organize a change for their schools and their community. This year the LGBTQA, Latino and Hispanic, and the differently abled communities of UIS stand together.
The Break the Silence event encourages marginalized, undocumented, and individuals with disabilities to come out of the shadows and embrace their identities. We ask our fellow students to join us to unite, raise awareness, and promote inquisitive intersectionality against oppression, hate, and inequality.
Comedian, Greg Walloch, provocatively explorers topics of disability and sexuality to promote greater understanding and acceptance through comedy and personal stories. Artist, Julio Salgado, uncovers the lives of undocumented and queer youth through art and is co-founder of Dreamer's Adrift.
